Inlays and Onlays are an ideal dental restorative solution that is needed by most of us to repair the teeth that have been damaged, one way or another. They tend to not only improve the oral hygiene of a person but also they tend to enhance the appearance of our smiles. Dental inlays and Onlays come in handy when a person’s old dental fillings need removal or are needing replacement. The dental inlays are similar to the dental fillings, they fit inside the teeth, specifically inside our cusp tips. On the other hand, dental Onlays are rather an extensive dental restoration. They tend to extend over our cusps, of the teeth that have been treated. Both dental inlays and Onlays, tend to revive our smile and dental appearances.
The Basic Procedure:
There are two kinds of dental inlays and Onlays:
The Direct ones are customized in a dental clinic itself. Only one visit is necessary to place them. Whereas the indirect ones are specifically made in a dental laboratory; this takes about two visits for placing them. Depending upon the amount of tooth you have left with you, you shall be given the type that will be appropriate for you.
Direct Inlays and Onlays: your dental care provider is going to remove all forms of tooth decay, and is going to give shape and contour to your teeth before placing the direct ones on your tooth. In between, they are also going to place a layer of composite resin to fit the shape of the tooth. Once the inlay is hardened, your dental care provider is going to cement it to your teeth. Once all of this is done, your teeth will be given a final polish and a slight shaping for your teeth to look natural.
Indirect Inlays and Onlays: for this, your dental care provider is going first to take impressions of your teeth that needs restoration as well as the teeth that surround them. The teeth that need repair will then get a temporary dental filling. Once the dental inlays and Onlays are prepared in the laboratory after the impressions, you will be called in for your second visit, during which your temporary filling will be removed, and your tooth is cleaned and dried. After this, the inlays and Onlays prepared in the laboratory shall be cemented over your teeth and later polished for a final touch. This process would take up to an hour to complete.
Both dental Inlays and Onlays are natural and lifelike dental restorations that are going to restore the original strength and stability back to your teeth. Both dental inlays and Onlays are going to make your oral hygiene better.they are convenient, easy, and comfortable. They are slightly bigger than a normal dental filling, but smaller than a dental crown and are cemented in one place completely.
Dental inlays or Onlays are made out of various material – gold, composite resin and even ceramic. They last up to a decade, and sometimes even longer. However, this depends upon the kind of material used, the amount of decay and damage your teeth have sustained, your eating and chewing habits, as well as how well do you maintain them with our oral health hygiene habits.
