If you have a few "or more" teeth missing from your lower and/or upper jaw, the dentist at Little Family Dentistry, in Bayonne, NJ may recommend dentures to replace those missing teeth. Today’s dentures look and feel like your natural teeth.
What are Dentures?
Dentures are a replacement for your missing teeth. Dentures can be taken out and put back into your mouth easily. There are two different types of dentures: full and partial. Full dentures replace all your teeth on the top or bottom of your mouth, while partial dentures replace a few missing teeth. At Little Family Dentistry, the doctor will help you choose the perfect type of denture based on your oral needs.
How Do Dentures Work?
Full dentures are constructed of flesh-colored acrylic that fits over your gum. The base of the upper denture covers the roof of your mouth. Lower dentures are horseshoe-shaped to provide room for your tongue. In our office at Little Family Dentistry, the doctor will take an impression of your mouth and forward the mold to our dental lab where your custom-made dentures are made by our trained technicians. Depending on your needs, the dentist will decide which type of denture is best for you.
Three Different Kinds of Dentures
Conventional Full Denture – This type of denture is placed in your mouth after any remaining teeth are extracted and the tissues on your gums have healed, which usually takes several months. It is important for the patients to understand that while the healing takes place, they will be without teeth.
Immediate Full Denture - Immediate full dentures, on the other hand, are inserted immediately after your teeth are removed. At a previous appointment, the doctor will take some measurements and make a mold of your jaw. The advantage to patients is that after the teeth are extracted, they leave the office with teeth; however, several months later, the dentures may need to be realigned because the bone supporting the dentures heals, which may cause them to slip.
Partial Denture - Partial dentures rest on a framework made of metal that fastens on to your natural teeth. A crown may be placed on a few of your natural teeth so as to serve as anchors for the denture. Similar to bridges, partial dentures are removable.
