In our Bayonne, New Jersey dental office, Little Family Dentistry uses state-of-the-art dentistry to help our patients achieve a beautiful smile. Our staff is trained in providing general and restorative treatment such as inlays and onlays.
Sometimes, Inlays and Onlays are mistaken for fillings because they are typically used to repair cavities. Dental inlays and onlays are used, not only when a filler is needed to restore a decayed tooth, but also replaces old fillings that need to be removed. An inlay is very similar to a filling and sits inside the top edges of the tooth; however, an onlay is needed for more extensive work and extends over the points of the treated tooth.
An inlay or onlay feels exactly like having a crown; however, there are a few differences. With a crown, the surface of the tooth undergoes a complete transformation in order for it to fit, whereas for inlays/onlays, only a smaller portion of your tooth's surface is removed. At Little Family Dentistry, we want to maintain as much of your natural tooth as possible; therefore, inlays and onlays are recommended instead of using a crown because they work just as well.
The process begins with the doctor injecting a local anesthetic on the tooth and the surrounding gum area. Once the area is numb, the doctor can remove any decay found on the tooth. Next, a mold of your tooth is taken and forwarded to our professionally trained lab technician. The image is used to create your inlays/onlays, which could be made of gold or tooth-colored resin. Before you leave our Bayonne office, the doctor will place a temporary filling and attach it to your natural teeth to protect it until the final restoration is complete. On your second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent inlays/onlays placed using a composite resin. A curing light is used to seal the bond.
Inlays/onlays are made to look exactly like your natural teeth. Rather than the metal fillings dentists used to restore a decayed tooth, inlays and onlays are longer lasting, stronger and end up strengthening your teeth. Daily brushing and flossing, along with regular dental cleanings will help them last for years.
