Some patients complain of a constant throbbing pain that typically indicates severe pulp damage. Root canals are done inside the tooth when there is an infection that reaches the pulp and nerve. During your dental exam, the dentist will evaluate the level of your pain. An x-ray will be taken to allow the doctor to see what is happening inside the tooth below the gum line.
What Is the Purpose of a Root Canal?
Infection can travel from the root of the tooth into the jawbone and possibly form an abscess. A root canal repairs and saves an infected tooth. During a root canal treatment, the nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed with gutta-percha material and sealed off with cement. Without treatment, the tissue enclosing the tooth will become infected and an abscess could form.
What Happens After a Root Canal?
For the first few days following the procedure, the tooth may feel sensitive. At Little Family Dentistry , we recommend our patients control any discomfort or pain with over-the-counter pain medicine. In some cases, the dentist may prescribe an antibiotic for a few days to ensure the infection is completely gone.
