At Little Family Dentistry, we can answer any question you may have regarding sealants. We want our patients to have a better understanding of the benefits of dental sealants and why our staff recommends them.
A sealant is a fine coating of plastic that is applied to the chewing surface of your teeth. They are a means of protecting against tooth decay and cavities on your molars. Your back teeth are susceptible to cavities and decay because they are used for chewing, and are the most difficult to clean. First, an adhesive is applied to the teeth. Then the sealant is painted on over the adhesive as a liquid. The liquid hardens and creates a smooth surface over the pits and grooves of the tooth surface, which makes it easier to clean your teeth with normal brushing. Sealants last for about ten years and can be reapplied if necessary.
Dental sealants are recommended for our younger patients. In children, molars erupt at five to seven years of age, with a second set appearing between the ages of 11 and 14. At Little Family Dentistry, we highly recommend our younger patients receive this treatment when their first molars erupt to protect them from decay. We also suggest dental sealants for our adult patients whose teeth are inclined to decay or for teeth that have suffered from decay in the past. We apply sealants in one visit. Sealants are a powerful way of preventing decay and keeping your smile healthy.
