Have you been downgraded to sleeping on the couch or in another room because of your chronic snoring? Do you make loud gasping sounds when you sleep? Well, you could be suffering from sleep apnea or have a snoring problem. We, at Little Family Dentistry located in Bayonne, NJ, can help you sleep soundly during the night.
What Is Sleep Apnea/Snoring?
When a person has shallow or disrupted breathing while they sleep, they could have sleep apnea. The clear signs are a pause in their breathing and then after a few minutes, or seconds, they start breathing normally again with a loud choking or grunting sound. Snoring occurs while a person is sleeping and continuously makes a loud sound through the mouth. Snoring happens because the soft tissue in your upper airway vibrates when you breathe. This condition is very common among men but can occur in women who are pregnant or going through menopause. At Little Family Dentistry, our staff understands that if left untreated, it can evolve into long-term health problems.
Two Kinds of Sleep Apnea Are:
The more common form of sleep apnea is called "obstructive" or OSA, and the other is "central" or CSA. Both are relatively similar, but the cause and treatments are different. OSA, the most common, can be caused by a variety of physical or emotional problems and typically goes undiagnosed.
Treating Sleep Apnea/Snoring
There are several treatments available for both conditions. In our Bayonne office, we recommend oral devices that look like retainers for our patients. We instruct them to wear the devices during the night to prevent their airway from being obstructed. These custom-made devices are an effective treatment option for OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) and snoring when worn in the mouth while you sleep. The appliance keeps the tongue in place, and shifts the jaw forward to open the airway further. In more severe cases of sleep apnea, the doctor will recommend you visit your regular physician for treatment.
